After fifteen years of service I was promoted to Workshop Foreman, which I carried out for a further ten years until promoted to Front Desk.
In the meantime the workshops were moved twice – from Stoneville Street to Swindon Road, four hundred yards away and from Swindon Road to their present location at Manor Road, three miles away.
Although I have worked at Broughtons for thirty-nine years, I am still classed as ‘The Kid’ by Ken, Brian and Steve, who have all worked here for more than forty years each.
The best thing to have happened during my employment at Broughtons was to be introduced to Prince Charles and Lady Diana at a Polo match at Cirencester Park.
The worst thing was Rolls-Royce and Bentley being sold out of the country.
