Cliveden has been a gracious patron throughout the history of
this country since 1666. Clearly visible for miles around, its
graceful presence atop one of Berkshire’s majestic hills has created
a sense of living history and preserved the ambience and values of a
bygone age. This great house has been home to some of the most
colourful and influential people in British history (since the 17th
century) and today this magnificent stately home is a 5-star hotel
with a matchless pedigree. Centuries of entertaining have ensured
that Cliveden has mastered the art of first class service,
hospitality and cuisine. This is what makes Cliveden unique. A visit
is unlike a stay at any other five-star hotel in the world; from the
moment you enter the estate you are swept into a world of opulence,
elegance and style. The individually named guest rooms are each
appointed to the highest standards and are dedicated to the people
who have given the House its unique place in the nation’s history.
The Duke of Buckingham, The Earl of Orkney, Frederick Prince of
Wales, The Duke and Duchess of Sutherland, T.E. Lawrence, George
Bernard Shaw, Charlie Chaplin, Earl Mountbatten and the peerless
Nancy, Lady Astor have all enjoyed hospitality here and their
memories are woven into the very fabric of the house.
To be asked to Cliveden for the weekend was an invitation no one
refused when Nancy Astor was the Lady of the House. Staff were
attentive, courteous and enthusiastic, and you could be guaranteed a
beautiful room filled with exquisite furniture and antiques. Today
things are just the same – a host of thoughtful touches and comforts
throughout the 39 bedrooms and suites, creating a true home away
from home. For those seeking the ultimate retreat Spring Cottage is
an exclusive hideaway like no other. Secluded in its own gardens on
the edge of the River Thames and complete with its own butler and a
fridge full of luxury provisions, it provides unrivalled peace and
privacy. So secret was the Cottage that it provided a much trusted
meeting place for Queen Victoria and the Duchess of Sutherland, her
favourite Lady-in-Waiting. The Cottage accommodates up to six
people, although it is also the perfect romantic hideaway for two.
Indeed the present day has seen this fine tradition of extravagant
pleasure continue. Indulgence is found in either of the
award-winning restaurants, relaxation assured in the tranquil
setting of the Pavilion Spa, and contentment confirmed with a
leisurely cruise down the River Thames aboard one of the Cliveden
vintage launches. The National Trust’s beautifully maintained
gardens and woodland will delight every age group whatever the
season.
As in the days when Cliveden was a privately owned home,
entertaining and therefore food is at the heart of the Cliveden
experience. Chef Mark Dodson’s sumptuous menus are perfectly
complemented by Cliveden’s celebrated cellar book and houseguests
can choose between the magnificent Terrace Restaurant, with stunning
views down the Parterre to the River Thames and a fine collection of
paintings, or the intimate gastronome’s haven, rightfully awarded a
Michelin star, Waldo’s, named after the man responsible for the
beautiful Fountain of Love that welcomes each new visitor.
But best of all is the latest addition of a fleet of helicopters,
bringing a glamorous new twist on the weekend journey from town to
country.
A visit to the house today is a unique experience and one that needs
to be repeated as often as decency permits. Its memory will stay
with you long after the dust has settled along the gravel drive as
you leave this magical place. There is nowhere else like it but then
perhaps I am a little biased. You will have to make up your own
mind.
