already well aware of the therapeutic effect of the Mediterranean
seawater which they exploited in abundance for their ablution or
immersions.
The antique spa baths are a perfect example of their philosophy
which has been revived in Monte-Carlo: mens sana in corpore sano.
Today, this philosophy has been enriched with oriental wisdom, the
understanding and use of Chinese medicines or manual techniques
inspired by acupuncture, a holistic approach to find the vital

Revival of a tradition in the Principality
In the 19th century, studies conducted on the Mediterranean seawater
revealed a far higher content of iodine and trace-elements than that
found in the ocean, which had previously been considered as more
beneficial.
As a result, the first Thermes Marins de Monte-Carlo were
inaugurated on the Casino terrace in 1908: three floors, 18 metres
high, more than 80 rooms, a hydraulic elevator and a double marble
staircase provide access to all interior areas making it a model in
its kind in Europe up until 1944.
In 1995, His Royal Highness, the Sovereign Prince Rainier III,
expressed the wish to give Les Thermes Marins de Monte-Carlo a new
lease of life. In this manner, he confirmed the tradition for
excellence and refined modernity by the most important
establishments in the Principality, thanks to the legendary know-how
of the Société des Bains de Mer.

1. Light

2. The water of the Mediterranean
The water used by Les Thermes Marins de Monte-Carlo is drawn up by a
high-tech pumping system, 300 metres offshore at a depth of 37
metres in order to guarantee its purity and ensure that all the
natural properties are retained. Owing to the complexity of its
composition, sea water cannot ‘live’ for more than 24 hours when
removed from its natural environment and cannot be reproduced in a
laboratory.
The first and foremost property of Mediterranean seawater with
respect to its therapeutic qualities is its high concentration of
negative ions. Created by sunlight, as well as the movement of air
and water, these ions are extremely rare in urban areas. However,
their ability to combine with bacteria and pollen and neutralise or
kill them, makes these ions extremely depurative. Furthermore,
thanks to their interaction with serotonin, a neurotransmitter
responsible for psychic tension, the negative ions provide a
beneficial relaxing effect on the entire nervous system.
Rich in trace elements, iodine, phyto and zooplankton, the water of
the Mediterranean is used at a temperature of 34 degrees and ensures
perfect osmosis as soon as it is in contact with the skin.
3. Nature and culture
Monte-Carlo offers 300 days of sunshine a year, a balanced climate
with minimal temperature variations, thus offering a mild winter and

A combination of personalised treatments with slimming and toning
properties. Used weekly, it has an overall slimming effect when

The Monte-Carlo massage
A fine spray of mint and orange blossom produces an immediate
sensation of well-being. The body is then covered with a sarong, the
traditional Oriental fabric, like a light and comforting veil.
The massage can then begin. This takes the form of pressure and
gliding movements from the shoulders to the legs, with prolonged
pressure on some areas. After uncovering your back, the therapist
takes some warm, scented olive oil in the palms of the hands and
starts a long and very slow massage over the upper body to take you
to a deeper state of relaxation. This stage ends with a deep and
thorough foot massage. The chest is then massaged followed by the
arms, shoulders and neck, to end with a scalp massage.
Star Massage
Humans are like a five-point star (head, feet, hands) where each
extremity is massaged and stimulated by using sliding and dotted
