Terry O’Neill is renowned as one of the finest photographers Britain
has ever produced – the National Portrait Gallery holds 65 of his
portraits – and in February one of London’s finest private
galleries, normally associated with traditional British oil and
watercolour artists, plays host to a comprehensive show of his work.

“Terry is keen to find acceptance in the normally traditional art
world with which St James is associated,” explains Giles
Huxley-Parlour of the Chris Beetles Gallery. “That’s why he wanted
to call his exhibition ‘Terry O’Neill in St James.’ ”
On 14th February 2006 O’Neill and the gallery combine forces to
launch a comprehensive new show of the great photographer’s work.

Since 1960 few celebrities of note have escaped Terry O’Neill’s
lens. Working for Vogue, Paris Match, GQ, Rolling Stone and
countless other magazines his pictures have helped launch the
careers of stars such as Brigitte Bardot, The Beatles, The Rolling
Stones and Kate Moss.
“His oeuvre represents a catalogue of fame over the last 45 years,”
says Giles.
This selling show will be the first major photographic exhibition in
St James, usually associated with more traditional art, and will
celebrate this phenomenal artistic achievement.
The gallery will show over 100 of O’Neill’s pictures, juxtaposing
classic images with lesser-known, more intimate portraits and those
new to the public eye. Subjects will include Sean Connery, Luciano
Pavarotti, Audrey Hepburn, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jerry
Hall, Clint Eastwood, Tina Turner, Orson Welles, Janis Joplin, Elton
John, Faye Dunaway, Michelle Pfeiffer, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert
DeNiro and many more.
The centrepieces of the show will be two breathtaking 6 x 4ft prints
of Mohammad Ali training and Frank Sinatra performing. Offering a
fascinating insight into the lives of two icons, they are comprised
of blown up contact sheets, showing a sequence of images as each
superstar prepares, performs and then relaxes.
Terry O’Neill in St James, The Art of Photography runs from 14th
February to 3rd March 2006, Monday-Saturday 10am-5.30pm.
A fully illustrated catalogue will be on sale, and all images will
be featured on the website.
