As specialists to South Africa, we would
like to introduce you to the true essence of this great land. We
have designed a bespoke voyage which takes you back to a time of
elegance, where visitors were touched by the sophistication,
friendliness and raw passion of South Africa – we have combined a
romantic train journey with visits to some of the best wineries in
the Southern hemisphere, finishing with a fully-fledged African
safari.

What really transforms the experience of this A&K bespoke tour is
where you stay and how you travel. First stop is the small and
welcoming Constantia Uitsig, on the quiet northern flanks of Table
Mountain close to Cape Town. At the heart of one of South Africa’s
leading vineyards, this private enclave offers a tranquil base, with
its own cricket oval for long summer evening cocktails. Its
restaurant, La Colombe, with its French-inspired cuisine is famous
with visitors and Capetonians alike: bookings are essential. The
wineries of Stellenbosch and Paarl are nearby and this is the
perfect place to explore the Cape. We feel three nights here will
give you plenty of time to discover this stunning region of South
Africa.
  There
are many ways to travel across the country, but none so effortlessly
comfortable as the renowned Blue Train, now celebrating its 60th
year of operation. Five-star luxury and personalised butler service
set the tone of this ultimate railway experience, with restaurant
cars serving the finest contemporary cuisine and an observation car
where 360-degree views of the Karoo make your champagne cocktails
that much more exotic. Accommodation for your one night aboard is in
comfortable en-suite compartments, where daytime sofas morph into
beds after dark, complete with chocolates on your pillow, bathrobe
and slippers. Lulled by the rhythm of metal wheels on rail, sleep
comes easily as you track your way across the continent. A night en
route in Johannesburg can be a positive pleasure when it’s spent in
the Grace Hotel. The
facilities include a heated open-air swimming pool, luxurious spa
and choice of restaurants serving some of the city’s most refined
and original cuisine, while an adjacent shopping mall shows
Johannesburg at its affluent best.
A short flight reaches the Sabi Sands Game Reserve on the unfenced
border with the Kruger National Park, for three final nights at the
Lion Sands River Lodge. Shaded by trees 800 years old and
overlooking the Sabie River, the lodge is still family-owned and
managed, and offers the classic safari experience with highly
trained guides and trackers. There are just 18 thatched guest
bedrooms, cool and minimal in style but with distinctive touches
from old Africa and facilities that include outdoor showers, and
private viewing decks. The main lodge is in traditional safari
style, with a large deck overlooking the river and a hide for
watching game unseen, but it also features some more modern
luxuries, such as two infinity-edge swimming pools and spa
facilities.
